Set 1:

In the first set of sentences, the form of the verb shows that the person denoted by the subject does something.
In the second set of sentences, the form of the verb shows that something is
done to the subject.

The verb forms that you have underlined are in active voice. The verb forms you
have circled are in passive voice.
The active voice is the form of the verb which shows that the person denoted by
the subject does something. The passive voice is the form of the verb which shows that something is done to the subject.

dirty clothes:

Process of washing dirty clothes
Dirty clothes need to be washed and made ready for wear. At first, water is taken in a bucket. Next, detergent powder is mixed into the water. Then the dirty clothes are dipped into the mixture and kept for thirty minutes. After that, the clothes are scrubbed thoroughly one by one. Later, the clothes are washed in fresh water. Then, they are rinsed and dried well. Now, they are folded and pressed. Finally, the clothes are ready to be used again.
The above paragraph has the following features:
- A suitable title
- An introductory sentence Passive voice is used (e.g. ‘be washed’)
- Use of linkers (e.g. at first, then, next, after that, later, now, finally etc.)
- The stages of the flow-chart are carefully followed
- A concluding sentence

Use the following flow chart to write a paragraph within 100 words on how to prepare orange juice:

Process of making orange juice
Making orange juice is simple. Firstly, buy oranges from the market and then sort them. The rotten ones are not to be used. Then, wash them and peel them. After this, put the oranges in the juicer and add sugar and preservatives as per requirement. Then the juice is extracted. Finally when the juice is ready, we need to pour into the bottles and seal them. And finally the juice is ready to be sold.
Exercise 10
Write a paragraph within 100 words on how you plan to take care of street dogs. Use the following hints:
Cruel actions towards street dogs — necessity of looking after them — ways of taking care of the dogs — conclusion
Answer: Dogs are among the most faithful animals. But these dogs are ill-treated by some people. Street or stray dogs often fall prey to cruel actions of the people. Some careless people kick or physically hurt these dogs. Strict action should be taken against such people who ill-treat these poor creatures. There is also a need to look after these dogs as they are the most ignored ones. There are many ways by which we can take care of these dogs, such as by adopting them or even giving them a dog care house. We all should remember one thing that these dogs too deserve love just like us. If we cannot take care of them, at least try not to be cruel with them. We can make their lives better by giving them proper shelter and food. They are the ones which will never betray us.
